EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
www.ifcee2018.com. This event, which will now be held every
three years, is one you do not want to miss. I hope all PDCA
members will come out to support this event, which will take the
place of the traditional PDCA Annual Conference in 2018.
PDCA’s year in review
It is important for our members to know how I feel PDCA has
progressed in 2017. Personally, I believe it has been a very successful
year. PDCA hired Debbie Schmidt on October 24, 2016
as the director of meetings and events. Her first opportunity to
shine was the PDCA 21st Annual Conference and boy, did she
shine. Comments from the membership were a resounding “mission
accomplished – great job!” What a great event.
In December 2016, PDCA hired Marian McMillin as the
office manager. Marian comes to PDCA with a great deal of
experience after working in the logistics industry for several years.
Now she keeps the office managed, handles all of our accounting
while working closely with PDCA’s CPA, manages our member
database and other relevant data entries, and is the complete
package as an office manager.
In 2017, PDCA established three new committees; the
PDCA Associate Member Council, the PDCA Steel Sheet Pile
Committee and the PDCA Contracts and Risk Committee.
Each committee, along with the other seven PDCA committees,
have their specific responsibilities and work hard to accomplish
the various tasks that move PDCA and often our annual strategic
plan forward. In 2017, the PDCA Safety and Environment
Committee produced the 21-page Pile Driving Safety and
Environmental Best Management Practices document; and the
PDCA Technical Committee continues to work towards improving
the IBC Chapter 18 with input from other geo-engineering
and geo-construction associations and individuals. Their work
will continue to be presented before the International Code
Council for consideration.
In 2017, PDCA presented the Pile Driving Professionals
Development course to two companies on an independent basis.
Buck Darling (H.F. Darling, Inc.) and Patrick Hannigan (GRL
Engineers, Inc.) taught the program to two companies that
had employees at that entry level and who needed to learn the
basics of the driven pile industry. PDCA appreciates Buck and
Pat’s contribution to these two companies by educating their
employees with respect to the pile driving industry, making
them more proficient and professional as they move into this
exciting career.
Membership in PDCA remains strong. In 2017, PDCA contractor
renewals increased over budget by 10 percent, indicating
PDCA is still representing the pile driving industry in a manner
that is positive and beneficial to our contractor members. PDCA’s
overall membership in 2017 increased by seven percent, adding 25
new companies to the membership roster.
PDCA has spent more than $9,500 in support of PDCA
chapters, with the Pacific Northwest coming on board in April
2017. PDCA now has eight chapters located across the U.S.
Financially, PDCA is stronger than ever. Our positive financial
position allows us to do more for our members, whether offering
services or benefits, reducing costs or eliminating costs. It also
allows us to do more without considering any membership dues
