several other methods including probing
and pre-drilling to achieve minimum tip.”
These initial challenges caused Boyd to
rethink the team’s plan for pile driving.
“We knew that it was going to take a
much more aggressive effort to have all of
these piles driven before Jan. 31, 2015,” he
said. “Our team decided to start a second
shift to drive piles at night as well as increase
the scheduled work time to 60-hour work
weeks. Unfortunately the ground conditions
continued to worsen, and driving got harder.
We realized the week of Thanksgiving that
the only effort that could achieve the goal was
to increase work production to double shifts,
seven days a week. This was a group decision,
and all team members knew what sacrifices
had to be made to achieve our desired outcome.
Even with the increase in production, we
knew achieving our goal would be a long shot.
The crews continued this work schedule from
Thanksgiving until completion, with one day
off for Christmas. We also knew that we would need our material and
equipment suppliers to be on call 24/7 for the inevitable breakdowns
that occur during these types of operations.”
The project team worked around the clock, continuously coordinating
with ICE® and Coastal Precast to enable the team to meet
this challenging deadline. The last 36-inch pile was driven on Jan.
28, 2015.
After successfully meeting the schedule requirements for the
installation of the pile foundations, the project team has been moving
forward with the mass concrete placement and the erection of
the large post-tensioned concrete girders.
The Wilmington Bypass project is currently on schedule and
is anticipated to be delivered to the NCDOT and the people of
North Carolina by the opening date of November 2017.
