Project credits
Clark Foundations could not have performed this project as
successfully without the dedication and quality of service we
received from our project partners and fellow PDCA members:
•• Atlantic Metrocast: Precast concrete piling
•• Skyline Steel: Soldier beams and steel bearing piles
•• JD Fields and Company: Sheet piles
•• Triad Metal International: Soldier beams and steel
bearing piles
•• ICE®: Vibratory and diesel impact hammers and leads
•• Sunbelt Rentals: Hydraulic pile cutters
•• ECS Mid-Atlantic: Geotechnical engineers
•• Linkbelt: Crane rentals

and ensuring accurate location of bearing piles. Logistics were also
a major hurdle to overcome since five driving rigs, three assist rigs,
two extracting rigs and three drilling rigs had to be coordinated
with multiple pile and material deliveries. Work had to be coordinated
many days in advance to maintain production as well as
allow flexibility to the designers. An additional challenge was the
soft soil conditions at the bottom of excavation, which limited the
movement of cranes only to specific areas and created a limiting site
that required daily coordination.
By the end of the project, a total of 33 miles of pre-drilled holes
and more than 44 miles of driven bearing piles were installed under
all five parcels. A total of 25 PDA tests and three static load tests
were performed, which validated and refined the redesign. Clark’s
value engineering options allowed for an aggressive schedule to be
achieved with the addition of a cost saving to the developer. t
