fixed dock berths in one of the busiest cruise
ship destinations in the U.S. The company
is also providing pile driving analysis,
construction administration and inspection
service throughout the project, using its
extensive experience in cruise ship facilities.
Another ongoing PND project in
Alaska is at Dutch Harbor, one of the
largest fisheries ports in the U.S. in terms
of volume of seafood caught. The work
involves replacing existing pile-supported
docks with a new 610-foot dock featuring
Open Cell™ bulkheads. As part of its design
service, the company has been furthering
research in a relatively new direction –
pile driving sound attenuation in water.
“Requirements for noise attenuation
for pile driving applies not only in populated
areas. It is coming more to the forefront
recently in marine projects such as at Dutch
Harbor,” said Campbell. “We had marine
mammal observers out there while going
through the permitting process to determine
likely impacts; they are out there now
to avoid the impact of pile driving noise on
marine mammals. We will also be conducting

some hydro-acoustic monitoring in the
area. If any critical species get too close, the
pile drivers have to shut down their work.”
Of its more than 120 employees, at
least half are registered engineers, ready to
apply the PND expertise out of offices in
Seattle, Juneau and Houston along with the
original headquarters in Anchorage, Alaska.
Recently, under PND Engineers Canada Inc.,
the company opened an office in Vancouver,
Canada in order to facilitate work there.
“The technology we’ve learned, beginning
in Alaska, is relevant for great opportunities
to expand not only into other Arctic
areas but all over the world,” said Keiser.
More than 36 years ago, when the
original founders first put their names to
their commitment to engineering excellence
and innovation, they set down the roots of a
strong and growing company that continues
to flourish today. Campbell is proud to see
this work ethic continue in modern-day
PND Engineers.
“We’re focused on doing good engineering
work and have grown gradually
over the life of the company because of that,”
he said.
Work hard, learn how to do it better
and then make it happen – from the
beginning, that’s been the key to the growth
and success of PND Engineers, Inc. ▼
