a technology designed, developed and
patented by PND that can be adapted to
many uses and conditions, including, as at
this project, maximizing limited space and
eliminating the need for internal struts and
walers. The excavations in New Orleans are
up to 52 feet deep, and with the use of the
Open Cell technology, cranes can deliver
materials from dry land while working right
next to the temporary piles holding the
excavation open. To date, this system has
been used successfully in more than 200
projects across North America.
Continuing its research, in 1983, PND
Engineers also developed Spin Fin™ Piles, a
cost-saving alternative for pile foundations.
Thousands have been installed in a variety
of applications, such as limited overburden,
energy absorption and soft soils. Equipped
with angled plate fins, the piles rotate when
driven into the ground.
“This is an interesting design that we’ve
used quite a few times in the past,” said
Campbell. “And we are using it currently
in two new cruise ship berths being
constructed in Juneau, Alaska.”
