As general contractor in the Tusher
Diversion Dam project, Gerber
Construction needed a vibratory
pile driver that is powerful, versatile
and easily adapted to different situations.
The Utah company found all of that in
the Grizzly MultiGrip™, manufactured by
Gilbert Products.
The focus of the project is, as Gerber
vice-president Steve Fox puts it, “A big, huge
dam that diverts water for irrigation.” After
a century of reliable service to communities
in eastern Utah, the dam was hit by 2010-
2011 flood events that compromised its
structural integrity. Gerber Construction
was contracted to head up comprehensive
rehabilitation intended to ensure continued
service well into the future.
“We are in the process of re-piling as
part of the dam’s repair and rehabilitation,”
said Fox, whose office is near Salt Lake City.
“Back in 2011, it was washed out. That did
some damage to the structure, and so now
we’re rebuilding it.”
The folks at Gerber Construction
needed new pile driving equipment for this
demanding job, some of which had to be
done in tight spaces for conventional pile
driving. The job consists of driving more
than 400 twenty-foot-long sheet piles into
a challenging soil. After scoping out their
options, the folks at Gerber decided to purchase
a Grizzly MG-90 in November 2015
to fit their Volvo 330 excavator.
“One of the reasons we liked the
Grizzly MultiGrip is because of its unique
side clamp,” said Fox. “You can pick it up
out of the pile itself. You don’t have to worry
about cables or other things to handle it.
You can easily pick it up out of a pile location
without having to attach cables.
“That vibratory driver mounts on an
excavator, and so you’re able to put it right
where you want it easily. On an old pile
driver, we would have to attach a cable to
the pile, pick it up, dangle it in place and
then try to feed it down before driving
it into place. With the Grizzly, the process
is so much more efficient because it’s
excavator-mounted, which gives us so much
more maneuverability.”
Fox says the Grizzly MG-90 enables
his crew at the dam site to get more done
more efficiently.
