Indeed, Land points to pressures from offshore.
“We need to pay attention to imports. Here in the U.S., the
playing field should be level. It’s about jobs, building American
business and product consistency and standards,” he said.
Looking forward, Land is confident the sector will follow the
uptick in building that is currently underway.
“Overall, the industry will stay pretty level. We see a spike in
private construction right now. The trend is for institutions and
government to follow and the piling sector will be there with the
equipment and the skills to get the job done,” he said.

most construction sectors, the piling industry is understaffed. Land
sees this as a leading problem that must be tackled by a joint effort
between industry, education and government.
“It’s up to the industry through organizations such as PDCA
to communicate that there are good jobs available to those with the
right skills. Working with the industry, schools and government
can provide the incentives and the programs to get those workers
onto sites across the U.S.,” he said, noting that not everyone has
the benefit of having an open door to experience like he did with
his father.
“Training is essential, but there is no substitute for experience,”
said Land. “Yes, we need young guns and we need lots of
them, but there has to be a base of industry professionals to guide
them along the way.” t
