PDCA YOUNG GUN
some toymakers to make their toys more
gender neutral, and is especially impressed
with toymakers who have designed construction
play sets specifically for girls.
Such toys, in her eyes, encourage girls
to play with the building block, rope and
pulley-based play sets that have typically
been considered the domain of boys. Bell
thinks that the more comfortable a girl
feels with basic engineering concepts early
on, the greater the potential that she will
see the construction industry as a career
option later in life.
For her part, this past year Bell became
secretary of the Puget Sound Chapter of
the National Association of Women in
Construction and looks forward to participating
in the organization’s community outreach
efforts with local girls.
Future goals and vision for the
industry
In the coming years, the 26-year-old looks
forward to moving up through Skyline’s
ranks and taking on more responsibility.
To that end, she is looking to enroll in an
MBA program in the Seattle area in 2016.
“I’m hoping to gain a more wellrounded
background by combining my
engineering expertise with a business
mindset,” said Bell.
In the future, she sees a researchdriven
industry that is both increasingly
efficient and an even better environmental
steward.
“Here in the Northwest, there are a
lot of environmental concerns with pile
driving. The research at local universities
is all about trying to find out ways to
minimize that environmental impact,”
Bell said. “I think that with ongoing
studies, the industry will continue to
grow as we find new, more efficient and
more environmentally friendly ways to
use steel.” t
