“You can’t really succeed at business if you have left off another
important aspect of your life. The lack of balance will impact
your decisions. Too much of one thing can be detrimental.”
– Mike Moran, President, Cajun Deep Foundations
supports a program where we offer a pile
driving class for professors, the Professors’
Driven Pile Institute. We have also assisted
with a recent test study on piles at Louisiana
State University in Baton Rouge.”
According to Moran, success comes
from thinking outside the box. His goal is
to raise the level of overall understanding
and then go further.
“We don’t want to do things the same
way because that’s the way they’ve always
been done. This does not create a culture of
improvement. You cannot be static. In our
industry you are either growing or declining,”
he said, mentioning that to really move
forward, companies and individuals have to
network. “This is a strength of organizations
such as PDCA, where you can get
to know the guys in the business and can
discuss new ideas in a collegial forum with

and pile types have improved greatly. And,
while our job is never simple, the advances
in the industry are making it easier for us
to enhance performance and this includes
safety,” he said.
Moran also sees the importance of
mentoring and helping students move forward.
Looking back, he credits industry
pros like Burl Williams and Dick Short
with helping him.
“These men helped me get the fire
going and got me thinking about the
detailed, technical aspects of the industry
and helped take my thinking to a different
level.”
Today, he is paying it forward with
Cajun Deep Foundations working with
students in a number of areas.

people who do specialized work.”
Life balance is another key point to
Moran’s thinking. Besides running an
$80-million-plus company, he finds time
to coach soccer and focus on family. Moran
is also an active church member who finds
time for community in a wide range of
areas.
“You can’t really succeed at business if
you have left off another important aspect
of your life. The lack of balance will impact
your decisions. Too much of one thing can
be detrimental,” he said, adding that he sees
a need for people to unplug their phones
on occasion and just spend time with the
people they love.
Real success, says the Cajun Deep
Foundations’ president, is more about being
realistic and seeing beyond the simple math
to find the whole picture. t
